Webinar #1: Clinical Tools and Resources for an Effective Response to a Chemical Emergency

Principals from Emory University and Augusta University will describe how the Southern Regional Disaster Response System (SRDRS) has progressed through their first two years of program establishment to complement existing preparedness and response frameworks by leveraging telehealth technology. This presentation will highlight signature telehealth initiatives of the SRDRS aimed at enhancing situational awareness, patient care coordination, and access to highly specialized clinical and health system operational expertise with the goal of improving regional surge capacity following a CBRNE or other surge event.

The Serious Communicable Diseases Unit (SCDU) at Emory University is the Health and Human Services-designated Region IV Emerging Special Pathogens Treatment Center (RESPTC). As a RESPTC, the SCDU is committed to educating frontline health care workers and emergency responders in Region IV on special pathogen preparedness and response.

The American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT) and the Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site (REAC/TS) in partnership with the Region 7 Regional Disaster Health Response Ecosystem (RDHRE) and in collaboration with the Region 4 Southern Regional Disaster Response System (SRDRS) are pleased to offer this course on emergency medical response to exposures from radioactive materials and toxic chemicals. The Office of Emergency Management, within the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ATSDR) and the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), supported the development of this unique course to familiarize health care providers and responders with toxic exposures.

The course will review the medical and psychological consequences of exposures to a variety of chemical and radiological materials. It will include practical information regarding scene safety for such agents as high potency fentanyl analogs, inhaled irritants, and proper decontamination of a victim contaminated with radiological material.

On June 9, 2023, the SCDU will host two training sessions for health care workers in Georgia.  

EMS Biosafety Transport Course: This course is designed for EMS providers of all types, but any health care personnel who are at risk of exposure to patients with a high-consequence infectious disease are welcome to attend. Course participants will learn how to identify high-consequence infectious diseases; what infection prevention and control precautions are needed to care for suspect patients; how to reduce risk through environmental controls; and more.

Frontline Hospitals Course: The hospital-based course was developed for medical and nursing staff, emergency management, education and training leaders, and infection prevention staff. Course Learning Objectives

• Distinguish among various high consequence infectious diseases (smallpox, MERS, Ebola Virus Disease, novel influenza)regarding their clinical characteristics and transmission mechanisms for the purpose of PPE selection and enhancing worker safety.
• Explain standard- and transmission-based infection control precautions.
• Describe environmental controls, work practices and safety equipment that will decrease the likelihood of inadvertent exposure to infectious bodily fluids.
• Describe waste management and post-mission health monitoring.
• Demonstrate donning and doffing of PPE under the direct supervision of faculty that have experience with transport and management of patients with high conse-quence infectious diseases.

On September 20, 2022, the Ministry of Health of Uganda officially declared an outbreak of Ebola disease caused by Sudan ebolavirus (SUDV). This is the fifth outbreak caused by SUDV in Uganda since 2000. No probable or confirmed cases related to this outbreak have yet been reported in the United States.

During this COCA Call, subject matter experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will discuss signs and symptoms of Ebola, disease progression, importance of alternative diagnoses or treatments, and the utility of a CDC clinical consult. Presenters will also review specimen handling and testing biosafety, and infection prevention and control recommendations.

If you are unable to attend the live COCA Call, the recording will be available for viewing on the COCA Call webpage a few hours after the live event ends.

Continuing Education will not be offered for this COCA Call.

EMS personnel have been working for over 2 years to manage the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now the monkeypox virus is making people ill in numerous countries where it is not typically seen, including the United States. Implementation of a hierarchy of controls is important for the safety of EMS personnel managing patients ill with either of these viruses. Speakers will provide a COVID-19 update, and then review what is known about the current monkeypox outbreak. Learners will hear how to use the familiar identify, isolate and inform strategy to recognize a case of monkeypox, take appropriate infection prevention measures and engage public health and health systems for follow-up management.
